Abstract :
A new category of solid state photon detectors with the novel configuration of Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (APD) array is being developed intensively around the world because of its excellent performance together with ease of operation. The basic principles of operation as well as the status and the prospect of the detector are briefly reviewed.
