Abstract :
A 3-D heat transfer model has been developed for slab caster. Two major inputs to the model are the local heat flux profile in the mould and the heat transfer coefficient in secondary cooling zone. The local heat flux profile in the mould is determined from the measured temperature at different locations of the mould wall in a running slab caster. The heat transfer coefficient in the secondary cooling zone is determined from the equation given in literature. The surface temperature of the strand predicted by the heat transfer model is validated with the measured strand surface temperature of the running slab caster. The model is used for prediction of strand temperature profile, shell thickness at mould exit and liquid pool profile in the strand for various operating parameters.
