Abstract
A thermodynamics and kinetics analysis of moisture-induced embrittlement (MIE) in polycrystalline Ni3Al and Co3Ti alloys is presented in this work. This shows that both alloys are susceptible to MIE, but the propensity in Co3Ti alloys is weaker, and that the mobility of moisture-induced hydrogen atoms plays an important role in MIE. Based on this model, MIE will not occur at cryogenic temperatures; high strain rates and segregation of boron subdue MIE.
