Abstract :
Temperature introduced worksoftening has been observed in Be/Al composites with 70% volume fraction of Be reinforcement. The composites exhibited a normal workhardening behavior at room temperature but flow softening occurred at 232°C and above. Fractographic examinations showed that extensive matrix plastic flow and interface sliding occurred at elevated temperatures, which led to local rearrangement of beryllium particles. The rearrangement resulted in a reduction in flow stress of the composites.
