Abstract
The back stress exerted on climbing dislocations past cuboidal particles is calculated. It is assumed that particles are non-interacting, i.e. do not exert an attractive force on by-passing dislocations. The analysis is based on earlier work by the author, where the shape of a climbing dislocation was calculated using a criterion of minimum energy. The back stress is found to be proportional to the applied stress τ. The constant of proportionality is about 1/3 for an angle of 45° between particle-face and glide plane. It depends only weakly on the interparticle spacing, i.e. the normalized stress τ/τo (τo, Orowan stress).
