3′-Vinyl-2,2′:5′,2′ʹ-terthiophene: synthesis, polymerization and copolymerization with styrene

A simple two-step synthesis of the previously unknown 3′-vinyl-2,2′:5′,2″-terthiophene from 2,3,5-tribromothiophene is described. The availability of 3′-bromo-2,2′:5′,2″-terthiophene described in this work should be useful for the synthesis of many other 3′-substituted polythiophenes. The preparation and some properties of poly(3′-vinyl-2,2′:5′,2″-terthiophene) and of a copolymer of 3′-vinyl-2,2′:5′,2″-terthiophene with styrene are reported.
