Abstract
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the effects of (2,5) chemical substitution on the optical absorption in the phenylene-based conjugated polymers. The effects of the substituents on the optical absorption spectrum are weak. The 3.7 eV band is predicted to be polarized predominantly along the polymer chain axis. This prediction is confirmed experimentally.
