The Theory of Metals in One Dimension

We review the Luttinger liquid and the Hubbard model, and mention the t-J model, insofar as their one-dimensional versions help form a coherent picture of the many-electron metallic phase in one-dimensional structures. A brief history is followed by a summary of some key concepts.
