Control of the addition of various carbanions onto C60 in polar and non polar solvents

The reaction between various “living” polymers and C60 was investigated in polar and non polar solvents. In toluene only addition is observed, a maximum of 6 chains are grafted using a styryl or an isoprenyl carbanion and 3 with 1,1-diphenyl ethenyl. In THF, for all three carbanions studied 2 electrons are first transferred followed by addition of respectively 4, 3 and 0 chains with the carbanions styryl, 2-vinyl pyridinyl and 1,1-diphenyl ethenyl.
