Abstract :
Electrochemical properties of C60F36 have been studied by cyclic voltammetry in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate. The electrochemical reductions of C60F36 are reported for the first time. The first and second half-wave potentials for C60F36, respectively, are −0.05 and −0.48 V vs. Ag+/Ag as opposed to those for C60 (−0.88 and −1.32 V) and C60F46 (0.51 and 0.01 V) indicating that the electron affinity of C60F36 is smaller than that of C60F46 by ca. 0.56 eV. The results also demonstrate that the electron affinity and, consequently, the electronic structure of C60Fx varies as a function of the number of fluorine atoms attached to the C60 molecule.
