Abstract
A useful concept in energy conversion processes is that of the equivalent magnetic circuit, which is analogous to the electric circuit, and the essential tool of the applications engineer is an equivalent electric circuit that may be employed to model the properties of combined magnetic and electric systems. These two concepts are used in this paper for a 1 kVA, 220 V/110 V, 60 Hz amorphous metal core transformer. This transformer was built with a two-winding shell-type configuration. The magnetic properties of the amorphous material and the coreʹs dimensions determine its reluctance. In fact, this reluctance is nonlinear, but for the purposes of analysis, the B-H characteristic was approximated by a linear relationship. Based on these assumptions, two equivalent circuits are developed: one for the amorphous metal core and the other for a laminated steel core. Experimental tests were performed to determine the main equivalent circuit parameters for both transformers.
