Abstract
To obtain the titanium–aluminum binary alloys having known composition, we have been trying to control the aluminum concentration on the titanium surface by means of a chemical transportation technique. In this experiment pure aluminum was used as aluminum source and aluminum chloride was as carrier gas. Control of the aluminum concentration on the titanium surface was achieved by adjusting the heating temperatures of both the aluminum source and the titanium substrate placed in both sides of the evacuated reaction tube. Experimental results show that all of the equilibrium phases existing in the titanium–aluminum binary system can be formed on the titanium surface.
