Abstract
This paper describes recent developments in the processing of continuous fibre reinforced titanium alloy metal matrix composite. Used selectively, MMCs can have a dramatic effect on performance and weight. They combine the exceptional strength and stiffness of a ceramic with the many advantages of a metal matrix, which include elevated temperature capability, impact resistance, and environmental stability. Titanium MMCs have passed through the initial material research stages and the basic mechanical performance criteria are now well established. Further progress towards commercial exploitation now depends on detailed process definition and cost reduction.
