Abstract
Recent studies examining the ultimate load carrying capacity of bolted joints have demonstrated the conservative nature of bearing strength provisions within the 1994 Aluminum Design Manual (ADM). In this research paper, the bearing capacity and hole deformation characteristics of three widely used aluminum alloys are examined. The contribution of sheet confinement and bolt pre-load to bearing strength is elaborated and the recommendation for design rules is highlighted.
