Abstract
The optical properties of conjugated polymers in strong electro-static fields are calculated from a simple self-consistent one-dimensional model using density-functional theory. The Franz–Keldysh effect dominates the electro-optic response. It is demonstrated that self-consistent corrections to the excitation spectrum become significant above a certain critical field strength.
