Abstract
The microstructures of a wear induced surface glazed layer formed during sliding wear of Nimonic 80A against Stellite 6 at 20 °C using a speed of 0.314 ms−1 under a load of 7 N have been investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy in combination with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The results indicate the formation of a wear resistant nano-structured glazed layer. The mechanisms responsible for the formation of the nano-polycrystalline glazed layer are discussed.
