Abstract :
For completing previous work on thermoelastic stresses in white cast iron, micromechanical calculations were performed of the elastic behavior of spherical and lamellar ferrite crystals which are embedded in an elastically isotropic matrix. The X-ray elastic compliances were calculated as well as the thermoelastic stresses and the strain of the lattice-plane spacings in the case of a thermally anisotropic matrix. The input for the calculations were the thermal eigenstrains, the single-crystal elastic moduli of ferrite, and the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae. The isotropic elastic moduli of the matrix were calculated according to the self-consistent Krِner method. The lattice-plane spacings of the lamellae are more or less drastically changed on permuting the Miller indices h k l. The average value, however, yields relevant properties of the specimen which deviate only by a few percent from their correct values, depending on h k l and the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae.
