Abstract
An existing two-phase mathematical model that addresses hot tearing formation in aluminium casting is extended to include microporosity formation and its effect on quantities associated with hot tearing formation. An application addressing the start-up phase of aluminium direct-chill casting reveals that thermally induced deformations increase the porosity level, and thus the hot tearing susceptibility if hot tearing is considered to be an “opening-up” of micropores caused by the deformation.
