Abstract :
Discs of Cu60Zr20Ti20 (at.%) composition were produced by high pressure torsion. Radial dependence of the microstructure was monitored by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The inhomogeneous microstructure of the central region consists of particles of about 50 μm and a surrounding matrix. With increasing radius, abrupt transitions take place in the morphology: first the large particles were attrited into lamellae then they transform into a homogeneous microstructure. Microindentation measurements revealed that the hardness showed a significant maximum with refining microstructure.
