Abstract :
The structure, thermal stability and tensile properties of (Cu0.5Zr0.5)100−xAlx (x = 5, 6, 8) bulk metallic glasses have been investigated. A good correlation between glass transition and Youngʹs modulus was observed. Moreover, the (Cu0.5Zr0.5)100−xAlx (x = 5, 6, 8) bulk metallic glasses investigated in this work show a unique deformation behaviour in tension: next to a high fracture strength the specimens exhibit a detectable ductility before catastrophic failure. Deformation-induced nanocrystallization and formation of twins in the nanocrystals are believed to play a key role in enhancing the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscope observations reveal a combination of vein-like patterns and cores with radiating veins on the tensile fracture surface.
