Abstract :
In order to assess Al–Si alloy as potential high temperature structural material, the tensile and wear properties of Al–Si alloy was investigated at various temperatures from ambient to 350 °C. Al–Si alloy was fabricated by stir casting technique. Microstructural studies showed that reasonably uniform distribution of silicon particles. It was found that the tensile strength (strain rate = 10−3 s−1) of alloy was decreasing with increase of temperature. The flow stress also decreased with increase of deformation temperature. The effect of temperature on tensile behaviour of the alloy had been evaluated and fractographs revealed that fracture behaviour of Al–Si alloy changed from brittle to ductile mode with increase of temperature. The increase in wear resistance of Al–Si alloy with increasing temperature was observed from wear tests. The oxidational wear was predominantly occurred during sliding.
