Abstract :
The elastic properties of an oxidized nickel were determined in the temperature range 20–600 °C using a low-stress vibrating technique. It is shown that the presence of thermally grown oxide coatings modifies significantly the Youngʹs modulus of nickel below its Curie temperature. The experimental results cannot be explained by a classical rule of mixture but rather by the control of magnetostrictive effects in the nickel substrate.
