Abstract
The Goudsmit-Saunderson treatment of multiple scattering has been used to calculate the angular distribution of Cherenkov light produced by electrons which are wholly contained in water. The calculations are completely independent of any Monte Carlo method and results from the EGS4 code are in remarkably good agreement, provided that the angle of EGS4 tracks is interpolated between steps. The calculations demonstrate that the treatment of multiple scattering in EGS4 is very accurate in the range of initial electron energies investigated, 1–15 MeV. The Goudsmit-Saunderson method can be used for the validation of the treatment of multiple scattering in any Monte Carlo simulation of contained electrons.
