Optically pumped polarized ion sources

The principles of operation for the optically pumped polarized hydrogen ion source based on charge exchange collisions between hydrogen ions and optically pumped electron-spin polarized alkali atoms are described. The problems associated with the use of an optically pumped-charge exchange polarized ion source for 3He are discussed.
