Abstract
The production and focussing of an intense DC Cs+/Cs0 beam for use in a colliding beams type polarized ion source (CBS) has been investigated. An improved optics for the acceleration of the Cs+ beam has been developed. Intensities, beam profiles, emittances and emittance-intensity characteristics have been measured. Pulsing schemes (⩾10 ms, ⩽1 Hz) for the Cs source are discussed. The new Cs source now forms part of the CBS for COSY/Jülich. Long-term operation with a Cs+ current of about 6 mA at 45 keV is achieved.
