The DIRC: Beam test results and performances

The DIRC is a novel Cherenkov ring imaging device which is the essential element of the BaBar detector particle identification system. A large-scale prototype of the DIRC has been tested in the CERN-PS beam: we review here the design of this prototype and its measured performances, which show to be fully consistent both with Monte Carlo simulation and BaBar physics requirements.
