Abstract :
The design and testing of a π/μ identifier suitable for use in pion–proton elastic scattering experiments in the momentum range 65–160 MeV/c is described. A neural network technique is used for particle identification. The apparatus (a multilayer scintillator stack) was found to have a particle identification efficiency of better than 98%.
