Abstract
Experiments have been performed to investigate the possibilities of using neutron transmission measurements to determine water content of geological sandstone samples. A beam of 14 MeV neutrons produced by a neutron generator was attenuated by different samples of sandstone and subsequently detected with plastic scintillators. Each sample was saturated with water and the difference in neutron attenuation between dry and wet sample was compared with the water content determined by mass balance of the sample. The measurements were found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo calculations using MCNP.
