Abstract
The construction of the ATLAS experiment is now entering into its final phase. The sub-detectors of the inner-tracking detector for ATLAS have, for a large part, been assembled and the integration of the sub-detectors, first into the inner tracker and subsequently into the ATLAS experiment in the cavern, has begun. An overview of the sub-detectors that make up the ATLAS inner tracker is given along with the motivation for some of the choices made regarding sensor technology and layout. Meanwhile, as ATLAS is being assembled, work has started preparing for a proposed luminosity upgrade to the LHC (Super-LHC) expected to be implemented around 2015. This will require the replacement of the full ATLAS inner tracker with a new detector designed to cope with the significant increases in occupancy and radiation dose, expected after this luminosity upgrade. Ideas for a possible layout of this new tracker and on sensor technologies that may be used are discussed.
