Abstract
The Double Chooz experiment aims at improving the current knowledge about the neutrino mixing angle Θ 13 , for which only an upper bound is known.
13 > 0 , it may be possible to observe leptonic CP violation included within the neutrino oscillation framework through a Dirac phase. As hadronic CP violation effects are too small to explain the apparent matter–antimatter asymmetry of the universe, leptonic CP violation is a promising candidate to be explored today.
pass the accuracy of the CHOOZ experiment with a reactor ν ¯ e experiment, higher statistics and reduced systematics are mandatory. The multidetector strategy chosen by Double Chooz will—in combination with well directed R&D and careful detector construction—be able to achieve these requirements.
