Abstract :
A study of indoor radon concentration has been carried out using a ionization chamber and charcoal canisters, in an area located on the south-eastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano. Comparing the results obtained from these two types of detectors used at the same time, we found that the measured values of radon concentration converge under particular meteorological conditions. A large number of tests using charcoal canisters have been performed on inhabited areas. Only measurements with humidity values lower than 80% were taken into account. The results show that higher values of radon concentration were obtained in constructions built near or on geological structures as faults and fractures; in fact these tectonic disturbances in the Earthʹs crust are preferential pathways for the radon migration and could enhance the indoor accumulation. The charcoal canisters, in volcanic areas and under particular meteorological conditions, can be used as a cheap and fast radon detection method, in order to individuate radon prone areas. Subsequently, long period indoor measurements using other methodology should be carried out, with the aim to evaluate radon and its components, and levels of exposure for public health.
