Abstract :
This study aims to examine the implementation of phonics method in the preschool teaching in Brunei Darussalam. The study focuses on the processes that occur during the phonics method of teaching in the classrooms and used a qualitative approach involving three teachers and 69 students as respondents. Observations were carried out on the teachings of the three teachers and the responses given by the preschool students. Three types of instruments were used for data collection, namely, document analyses, observations and interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive method and the results confirmed that teachers were indeed applying phonics method in teaching reading. The teachers were also able to teach reading using phonics as required by the Ministry of Education, Brunei. Phonics method was also found to have a positive impact on pupilsʹ learning performance, especially in terms of reading speed. In addition, students were seen to be more motivated and interested in reading a variety of reading materials.
