Abstract :
Using tensile test and in situ SEM, the microstructures of two kinds of high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels were investigated. Deformation mechanisms, especially slip bands and deformation twins, are discussed. Results show that the slip and twinning both occur during the tensile testing. Slip bands stretch across each grain and are broadened during the tensile test and finally become microcracks. Solid solution strengthening is induced by nitrogen-alloying, which enhances the mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steels.
