Abstract :
If a cutting tool could be repeatedly formed without removal from a machine utilized in a cutting process, it would be highly beneficial in that it could reduce not only any positioning error due to a tool exchange, but also the consumption of scarce tool materials and energy. Composite electroplating to build up the cutting edge and anodic electrolysis to remove the worn-out plated layer, are utilized to realize this concept. Employing these processes, an on-the-machine edge-forming device has also been designed. The results of experiments indicate that, the device can complete all the processes within 4 minutes, and that the plated tools are able to cut JIS S45C (ISO C 45) steel.
