Abstract :
An investigation was conducted in order to determine the viability of using two-point probability distribution functions to predict the material properties of two-phase heterogeneous materials. The material of interest in this investigation was Titanium Diboride/Alumina ceramic (TiB2 + Al2O3). In TiB2 + Al2O3 ceramics, it has been noted that the connectivity of the TiB2 second phase plays a major role in the mechanical properties of the TiB2 + Al2O3 ceramic, spall strength in particular. Two-point distribution functions were obtained for the four types of microstructures of TiB2 + Al2O3 and were compared to experimental results that have been previously reported. The two-point distribution functions showed very good correlation to connectivity and spall strength results.
