Guillaume-François Rouelle (1703–1770), précurseur d’un enseignement géologique en France

Résumé ume-François Rouelle (1703–1770), démonstrateur de chimie au Jardin des Plantes et chimiste renommé, a dispensé de 1742 à 1768 dans cet établissement un enseignement très apprécié. À la même époque, il donnait en outre un cours privé dans lequel il mettait à profit d’habiles digressions pour évoquer la structure et la composition du globe. Cet enseignement a joué en France un rôle pionnier dans la prise de conscience de l’importance théorique et pratique d’une connaissance approfondie de la constitution de notre planète. Guillaume-François Rouelle (1703–1770), who was a renowned demonstrator of chemistry in the French Royal Garden (Jardin des Plantes), has been teaching there from 1742 to 1768 a successful course of chemistry. At the same time he was also giving a private course in which he was taking the opportunity of clever digressions for discussing the structure and composition of the terrestrial globe. This teaching has played in France a pioneering role in the awareness of the theoretical and practical importance of a thorough knowledge of the Earth constitution. To cite this article: J.
