Abstract :
The effects of different hydrodynamic conditions on the morphological development of mudflats were studied on a mudflat in the Dutch Wadden Sea. It appeared that during calm hydrodynamic conditions sedimentation takes place on the mudflat. Current velocities are the dominant processes in sediment transport during calm conditions. During periods of rough weather erosion is initiated. A combination of tidal currents and wave action is responsible for this erosion. During stormy conditions wave action increases considerably and becomes the dominant process in sediment transport. This results in severe erosion of the mudflat.
