Velocity boundary layers in the distant geotail and the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability

The formation of velocity boundary layers at the flanks of the distant geotail due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability has been studied. It is shown that the build-up of slow oblique perturbations leads to an anomalous viscosity sufficient for the formation of thick boundary layers in the distant magnetotail.
