Abstract :
The formation of velocity boundary layers at the flanks of the distant geotail due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability has been studied. It is shown that the build-up of slow oblique perturbations leads to an anomalous viscosity sufficient for the formation of thick boundary layers in the distant magnetotail.
