Abstract :
During the plasma startup, ramp-down and disruption in a Tokamak device, large eddy current would be induced in the electrical conducting components such as coil cases and vacuum vessels. As a result, it causes the large electromagnetic forces and thermal loads to these components. Integrated analysis of these fields must be conducted to ensure the avoidance of these components from any overheating and any over-stress problems under any circumstances. In this paper, we describe the integrated analysis method which combines the electromagnetic, thermal and fluid analysis as well as parameterized finite element modeling technique. The solution procedure to such an integrated problem by ANSYS Physical model is discussed. As an example, the thermal performance of toroidal field (TF) coil case of EAST device after a major plasma disruption is studied. A major disruption of plasma with current of 1.5 MA in EAST device would result in total Joule heat lead of 212 kJ of which some would be transferred to the coil cable resulting in the coolant temperature rise about 0.4 K.
