Sinkholes formed by piping into buried channels

Piping-induced sinks in flood-irrigated alfalfa fields on the distal part of a compound alluvial fan in Californiaʹs Central Valley lack discharge conduits. It is suggested that all inflow and sediment are dispersed underground in former distributary channels that are now buried.
