Abstract :
The reaches of the Changjiang River between Baidicheng and Fengjie of Sichuan province and Nanjinguan and Yichang of Hubei province, collectively called the Three Gorges channel, are about 200 km long. More than 90 deep troughs occur in this part of the Changjiang River, which cumulatively cover 45% of the Three Gorges channel. This study investigated the geomorphological features of the troughs in the channel. The troughs were formed by fluvial downcutting along lines of tectonic weakness. The deepest points are normally located in tectonic zones of high intensity where joints and fissures, longitudinal and transverse to the stream flow direction, intersect.
