Abstract
The radiological hazards of utilizing tungsten for divertors are investigated. The safety and environmental characteristics are assessed by an integrated approach coupling the evaluation of activation and tritium inventories, accident thermal transient analysis, mobilization of activated materials, and dose dispersion. The activation products can contribute a significant amount of mobilized dose in accidents while shallow burial for waste disposal is acceptable. Observations of trends that improve the safety and environmental performance are discussed.
