Abstract
This paper presents a non-linear effect of magnetic damping of conducting structures moving in magnetic fields. For this purpose, a simply typical model, i.e. a non-conducting and non-magnetizable cantilevered beam-plate with end coils in a transverse magnetic field, is employed in the discussion of this paper. After the second power of the rotation at the free end is taken into account, a nonlinear relation between the magnetic couple exerted on the coils and the rotation is gained. A formula of the effective damping factor for the nonlinear dynamic system with electromagneto–mechanical interaction is obtained by applying the method of energy balance. The numerical results show that the effective damping factor is changeable with the amplitude of the beam-plate or time. The larger the amplitude, the bigger the effective magnetic damping.
