  • Abstract
The JET facilities are being used since 1 January, 2000 within a new organisational frame set-up under the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA). The European character is reinforced, the JET scientific programme being directly conducted by staff from EU laboratories. The first campaign of the year 2000, C1, has now ended. Some preliminary results are highlighted: progress in the control of impurity seeded ELMy H-modes, lowering of power threshold for internal transport barrier formation, improved lower hybrid coupling, scrape-off power width measurements, plasma and first wall material migration studies and effect of plasma shape on neoclassical tearing modes. Various diagnostic enhancements are planned over the period 2000–2002, and one of the neutral beam boxes will be upgraded to provide an additional 7.5 MW of heating power by the end of 2002. In a longer time-scale, approval has been granted to an upgrade of the JET facilities, the JET enhanced performance project (JET-EP). To increase performance and flexibility, a variety of auxiliary heating and current drive systems will be installed: a new ECRH system (5 MW), an ITER-like ICRH antenna (7.5 MW), and a third NB box (7.5 MW), with consequent modifications in divertor and diagnostics.
