Abstract :
Safety-related plasma events were investigated to assess the effects on the design of ITER-FEAT. Overpower transients were calculated to estimate the maximum possible fusion power due to loss of plasma control, and the consequent damage to in-vessel components. A passive plasma shutdown during an ex-vessel loss of coolant was investigated to estimate the maximum first wall temperature and consequent hydrogen production by the beryllium/steam reaction. Scenarios of a bounding vertical displacement event were analysed to clarify the maximum in-vessel damage due to the plasma event.
