Abstract
This paper describes an analysis of the mechanical behaviour of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) toroidal field (TF) coil magnet system during fault conditions. Two types of electrical failures have been considered: one TF coil fully shorted and an unmitigated quench in one TF coil. The main consequences of these events have been assessed in terms of stresses in and loads on the mechanical structures of the TF coil and in terms of the reduction of clearance between components such as between the TF coil and central solenoid (CS), TF coil and thermal shield (TS) and TF coil and vacuum vessel (VV).
