Abstract :
ABSTRACT: “Awang Batil and Pura Taman: A Comparative Study of Malay and Orang Asli Storytellers Tradition”. The
study of oral storytellers of Malays in Malay Archipelago is often spoken and argued by various parties whether local
and Western scholars, especially in the fi eld of traditional literature.This paper will discuss about the two fi gures oral
storytellers, or better known as “penglipur lara” in Malay language. The fi rst storyteller has used the title of “Awang
Batil”, who inhabited in Kampung Pokok Sena, Chuping, Perlis, Malaysia. The second narrator named “Pura Taman”.
The second narrator is quite unique, because he is aboriginal tribes of Jakun in the Kampung Sungai Mok, Kuala
Rompin, Pahang, Malaysia. Writing is shown in comparison to the similarities and also diff erentiations highlighted by
these two storytellers. The objective of this paper is to document the process of the emergence of a storyteller and
also analyzes in depth the role played by them in the context of its milieu. As a backup of discussion, the views of G.L.
Koster (1997) on “The Role of Storytelling” are used to view the narrator or storyteller who relates it. Based on these
objectives, it can be seen whether these two storytellers through the process of emergence and sharing the same
role or each featuring a distinctive diff erence. Such research is particularly signifi cant in view of the contemporary
era, due to the culture of storytellers increasingly forgotten by the currently generation in Malaysia.
