Abstract :
Backgroud:Testicularmicrolithiasis(TM)isanuncommonconditioncharacterizedbycalcium
depositsintheluminaofsemineferoustubules.Theseintratesticularcalcificationsappearas
bright 2-3-mm echogenic foci on testicular ultrasound.Cumulated experience points to an
associationbetweenTM,intratubulargermcellneoplasiaandothertesticulartumors.
Objective: To assess the prevalence ofTM revealedon sonography in referred population
anditsassociationwiththeconcurrenttesticulartumors.
PatientsandMethod:Overa 129-monthperiod(August1991–May2002),2165highresolution
(7.5MHz)scrotalsonographieswereperformedintheImagingDepartmentofMehrHospital,
a referralcenterinTehran. CasesoftesticulartumorandTMwereselected.Thediagnosis
andhistologictypingoftumorsweremadebyhistopathologicstudies.
Results:A totalof15casesofTMwerediscovered,givinga prevalenceof0.7%.Concurrent
TMandtesticularneoplasiaweredetectedinfourpatients(27%casesofTM).
Conclusion:ItisstronglysuggestedtofollowthosewithTMwithphysicalexaminationand
