  • Abstract
    LearningEnglishverbsandtheirsyntacticfeaturescan act asthecoreofsentencescross-linguistically.EFLlearnersfacedif- ficultiesintheproductionofEnglishverbs’argumentstructures.This researchtriedtoinvestigateanddiagnosetheproblemsIranianEFL learnersencounterinproducingEnglishverbargumentstructuressyn- tactically.Seventy-fivestudentswhosemajorwasEnglishparticipated in thissurvey.First,theresearcheradministeredanOxfordPlacement Testtogetthreedifferentlevelsofproficiency,includingelementary, lowerintermediate,andupper-intermediate.ThenaTranslationTest wasconductedaftertheproficiencytesttoestimatetheparticipants’ productionofEnglishverbargumentstructures.Descriptivestatistics, togetherwithOne-wayANOVA,wereappliedtoanalyzethedata.The resultsdemonstratedthatlearnerswithdifferentproficiencylevelspro-ducedEnglishverbs’argumentstructuredifferently,andalsotheyfacedseriousdifficultiesproblemsinproducingdi-transitiveverbs.ExplicitteachingofEnglishverbs’argumentstructureswiththeirsyntacticfea-tures,indifferentcontexts,andmoreexposuretolanguageinputcanhelpEFLlearnersimprovetheirknowledgeofargumentstructures
