Abstract :
Sixty patients belonging of ASA I, II and III grades who were scheduled for lower extremities procedures under spinal anesthesia were divided into two groups of 30 patients each. The first group received 3.5 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine together with 0.6 ml of 0.9 saline while the second group received 3.5 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine together with 0.6 ml of preservative free midazolam equivalent to 3 mg . From the study it could be concluded that intrathecal 0.5% bupivacaine with 3 mg midazolam in comparison with 0.5% bupivacaine had a significant prolongation of postoperative analgesia. (297.1 ± 26.5 in group 1 vs. 463.8 ±16.1 in group2,p=0.001).Time to onset of sensory analgesia, maximum level of sensory block, time to reach it, and time to two segment regression were not statistically significant between the two groups (p 0.05). Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, side effects were comparable between groups. No neurological deficits were observed.
